Quick verdict

Cursor suits developers who want an editor built around an agent that edits files, runs terminal commands and searches code. You now buy it as the X Subscription: Plus at $8 a month, Premium at $30, Super at $100 and Ultra at $200, all billed monthly and before tax. Each plan also includes Grok and X Premium features, so part of what you pay for is not Cursor itself.

The principal limitation is where the line sits between plans. Plus includes Grok models only. Cloud agents, Bugbot pull request reviews and models from Anthropic, OpenAI and Google start at Premium, and even then those third-party models are billed on top at API list price. This rests on what Cursor and xAI document, not on our tests.

Strengths and limits

Strengths

  • An agent on every planCursor Agent edits files, runs terminal commands and searches your code. Cursor's pricing table ticks it on every plan, including Free with limited requests. Paid plans scale usage: Premium gets 4 times Plus, Super 15 times and Ultra 50 times.
  • Cloud agents and Bugbot from PremiumFrom Premium ($30 a month), cloud agents work on a branch in a cloud machine and open pull requests on GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket or Azure DevOps repos. You can start them from the web, Slack, GitHub comments or the iOS app. Bugbot reviews GitHub and GitLab pull requests on each update.
  • Models from six companies on Premium and upPremium, Super and Ultra let you pick models from SpaceXAI (Grok), Cursor (Composer), Anthropic, OpenAI, Google and Meta. Grok 4.7 has a 256K standard window and 500K long context in Cursor; Claude Opus 5.5 goes up to 1 million tokens, billed per use.
  • Rules and agents you define per repoOn every plan, project rules in .cursor/rules give the agent version-controlled instructions for one codebase. Custom subagents in .cursor/agents have their own prompt, tools and model, and MCP servers connect it to tools such as Notion. Cursor states no plan restriction for subagents.
  • Grok and X Premium in the same priceThe bundle adds Grok Chat, a general chatbot, plus Grok Imagine for images and Grok Voice, with Grok video generation from Premium up. These come from Grok, not from the Cursor editor. On X, Plus adds a checkmark and fewer timeline ads; Premium and up are ad-free on "most surfaces".

Limits

  • Plus is Grok only, with no cloud agentsPlan limit. The $8 Plus plan includes Grok models only, and "Latest Grok models" is listed as a Premium feature, so Plus may not get the newest one. Free and Plus have no cloud agents, no Bugbot reviews and no third-party models, per Cursor's pricing table.
  • Claude, GPT and Gemini cost extra on every planBilling limit. Even on Ultra at $200 a month, models from Anthropic, OpenAI and Google are not in the included pool. They are billed at API list price through top-ups, with spending caps you can set. Budget for the subscription plus that usage.
  • One pool for coding and GrokWorkflow friction. Each paid plan has one usage pool, refreshed weekly, shared by Cursor, Grok Chat, Voice, Imagine, Build and the Grok API. Chatting with Grok or making images draws on the same allowance as your coding. Plus is described only as "Basic" usage; top-offs are sold when it runs out.
  • Tab completion limits unclear on Free and PlusUnverified. Tab autocomplete exists in the editor, but the October 12, 2026 pricing page states no Tab limit for any plan. For Premium and up, xAI says Premium includes Cursor Pro benefits, and Cursor Pro listed unlimited Tab. For Free and Plus we could not confirm the limit.
  • Little documented outside codeNot documented. Cursor describes itself as a coding agent. On the pages we checked, chat uploads are documented for images only, not PDFs; spreadsheet analysis and research reports are not documented; and no data export is documented. Grok Chat in the bundle is the general assistant.

Based on what Anysphere documents for each plan, not on our tests.

Who it suits

A good fit if you

  • Developers ready to work in the Cursor editor or its command line tool
  • JetBrains users who want Cursor's agent in IntelliJ IDEA, PyCharm or WebStorm (2025.1 or later)
  • Repos on GitLab, Bitbucket or Azure DevOps that need a cloud agent (Premium and up)
  • People who would pay for Grok or X Premium anyway and also code
  • Trying models from several companies in one editor, paying per use for non-Grok models

Look elsewhere if you

  • Cloud agents or automatic pull request reviews on a budget: not offered on Free or the $8 Plus plan
  • Claude, GPT or Gemini included in the subscription price: not offered; they are billed on top at API list price
  • Writing, research reports or spreadsheet work in Cursor itself: not documented, and not verified by us
  • Students looking for a discount: Cursor documents none, only campus promotions

Models on each plan

The models each plan's own pages name, on the terms they give. A model being offered says nothing about how well the plan does your work.

  • Audio & Voice Talk it through by voice · Transcribe recordings and files

A use is listed when at least one plan documents every feature a task needs. Answer quality is a separate question: see below.

Using it day to day

Cursor runs as its own desktop editor, as a command line tool for macOS, Linux, WSL and Windows, as web agents at cursor.com/agents, and as an iOS and iPadOS app that the docs list for paid plans. The Cursor agent also works inside JetBrains IDEs version 2025.1 or later through ACP, using your Cursor plan, and with Xcode 26.3 or later projects through an MCP bridge. The Grok apps and X come with the bundle.

Free gives limited agent and chat requests and a starter allowance for Cursor's coding agents. Each paid plan has one pool shared by Cursor and Grok that refreshes weekly: Plus is the base, Premium 4 times Plus, Super 15 times and Ultra 50 times. Super adds priority model access at peak times and Ultra the earliest access to new products and models. When the pool runs out you can buy top-offs. Cloud agents need a repo on GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket or Azure DevOps. The agent's Browser tool can open, click and screenshot pages to test your app; a general computer-use agent is not documented.

Privacy, data and ads

Cursor's Privacy Mode, in settings, stops your code data from being used for training by Cursor or by model providers, which Cursor covers with zero data retention agreements. With Privacy Mode off, Cursor may use codebase data and prompts for training. Which setting is on by default is not documented on the pages we checked, so check it before you open private code.

No chat history or account data export is documented on the pages we checked. No ads are documented inside Cursor. The X part of the bundle is different: Free keeps standard X, Plus shows fewer timeline ads, and Premium and up are ad-free on "most surfaces". Cursor's data use page covers Cursor; read the Grok and X policies separately if you use those parts.

Read the vendor's own page: X Subscription (Cursor, Grok, X) privacy and data controls. We make no legal or compliance claim.

Test results

We have not tested X Subscription (Cursor, Grok, X) yet, so this page makes no claim about answer quality, and we show no example outputs. Run the same kit in it and in the alternatives, in your own account:

Getting started

  1. Install the Cursor editor and start on Free with a small repo. It has limited agent and chat requests and no cloud agents.
  2. Open settings and turn on Privacy Mode before you work on code you do not want used for training.
  3. Run our code repair kit: give the agent the kit's broken program and check whether the fix passes the kit's checks.
  4. Pick a plan by feature, not by name: Plus ($8) for Grok models in the editor; Premium ($30) if you need cloud agents, Bugbot or Claude, GPT and Gemini models; Super or Ultra only if Premium's weekly pool runs out.
  5. If you use third-party models, set a spending cap on top-ups before your first request.

Your fit

Tell Find my AI what you do and what matters; it checks every plan of X Subscription (Cursor, Grok, X) against your priorities, next to the alternatives.

Questions

What is the X Subscription, and how does it relate to Cursor?

Since October 12, 2026, Cursor (now owned by SpaceX) is sold as the X Subscription. From Cursor: the editor, the agent, cloud agents, Bugbot and Origin code hosting (beta). From Grok: Chat, Imagine, Voice and Build. From X: X Premium perks such as the checkmark. Cursor and Grok share one usage pool.

Does Cursor include Claude, GPT and Gemini models?

Only from Premium ($30 a month) up, and not in the included pool: they are billed at API list price through top-ups, with spending caps. Free has no third-party models, and Plus has Grok models only.

Is the new Ultra the same as the old Cursor Ultra?

No. The $200 X Subscription Ultra is a new plan with 50 times Plus usage in a pool shared with Grok. The old $200 Cursor Ultra is closed to new sign-ups. Existing Cursor, SuperGrok and X Premium subscribers see limited-time switching offers in billing settings, with terms not published.

Can I pay yearly, or get a student discount?

Yes: The X Subscription pricing help page lists yearly prices of $80 for Plus, $300 for Premium, $1,000 for Super and $2,000 for Ultra, before tax (cursor.com/pricing shows monthly prices only). There is no student discount, only campus promotions. Plus at $8 a month is called an introductory plan; we did not find how long that price lasts.

Does Cursor fix code well?

Cursor's documentation describes what the agent can do, not how well it does it, and we have not run our tests on Cursor yet. Run our code repair kit on Free before you pay, and compare it with another tool on the same program.
