Midjourney: plans, prices, strengths and limits
Midjourney is a paid image generator on the web and in Discord that also turns an image into a short video. There is no free plan, and companies above $1,000,000 a year in revenue need Pro or Mega to own what they make.

Quick verdict
Midjourney sells GPU time, not credits. Basic is $10 a month for 3.3 hours (200 minutes) of Fast time and no Relax Mode, so it stops when Fast time runs out unless you buy more at $4 an hour. Standard is $30 a month with 15 hours of Fast time and unlimited Relax Mode images, Pro $60 with 30 hours and Mega $120 with 60 hours. One image prompt uses about 1 minute of GPU time, and Fast time resets monthly with no rollover. Yearly billing is paid up front: $96, $288, $576 and $1,152. Prices are before tax, which Stripe adds at checkout. There is no free plan; Midjourney's only trial is a limited one in the separate niji · journey mobile app.
Ownership is the point to check before you subscribe. Midjourney's Terms say you own the images and videos you make, and ownership survives a downgrade or cancellation, but a company, or an employee of a company, with more than $1,000,000 USD a year in revenue "must be subscribed to a 'Pro' or 'Mega' plan to own Your Assets". Upscales of other users' images stay theirs, and Midjourney gets a broad license to your inputs and outputs on every plan.
Privacy also depends on the plan. On Basic and Standard there is no Stealth Mode, so what you make is public on midjourney.com by default. Pro and Mega include Stealth Mode, though the Terms do not guarantee that creations stay unpublished, and images made in shared Discord channels stay visible. Video starts from an image, not from text alone. This verdict rests on what Midjourney documents, not on our tests, which we have not run yet.
Strengths and limits
Strengths
- Plans priced by time, with unlimited Relax ModeStandard, Pro and Mega add Relax Mode, which gives unlimited images in a queue with waits of 0 to 30 minutes. Pro and Mega also allow unlimited SD video in Relax Mode and up to 12 image prompts at once in Fast Mode.
- Editing your own imagesThe Editor on midjourney.com takes an uploaded image or a pasted URL and offers Vary Region (inpainting), Pan, Zoom Out, Remix, layers and Smart Select erase, plus the Edit Model for V8.x. Edits use Fast or Relax GPU time.
- An image becomes a 5-second videoAny plan can turn a Midjourney image or an upload into a 5-second video, with an optional text prompt. Basic makes SD (480p) only; Standard, Pro and Mega add HD (720p) in Fast Mode. A batch of 4 SD videos costs about 8 minutes of GPU time.
- Ownership that survives cancellationThe Terms say you own what you make and that ownership survives a downgrade or cancellation. For companies above $1,000,000 a year in revenue, that holds on Pro and Mega.
- Data export from settingsYou can submit a data export request at any time from Account Settings on midjourney.com, and download your images and videos.
Limits
- No free planPlan limit. Midjourney has no free plan and no trial on the website or in Discord. The only trial is a limited one in the separate niji · journey app for iOS and Android.
- Public by default below ProPrivacy limit. Basic and Standard have no Stealth Mode, so creations are public on midjourney.com by default. On Pro and Mega, the Terms promise only an effort not to publish, not a guarantee, and images made in shared Discord channels stay visible.
- No training opt-out foundNot verified. We found no official page that describes a training opt-out. Midjourney's training-content summary says user prompts and inputs were used to train the model, and Stealth Mode is a visibility setting, not documented as a training control.
- Video only from an imageWorkflow limit. Text-to-video is not documented: video starts from an image, so a text-only video means making an image first. Basic and Standard have no Relax Mode video, and HD is 720p.
- No vector files, no logo tool, no APINot verified: SVG or other vector output, and any logo maker or logo mode; the Text Generation article even lists a logo prompt as a bad prompt example. No public API is documented, and the Terms bar automated tools.

What it documents for each use
- Images & Design Create images from a description · Make graphics for posts and slides · Edit my own photos · Remove a background · Make images with exact text
- Video & Animation Turn a photo into a video
A use is listed when at least one plan documents every feature a task needs. Answer quality is a separate question: see below.
Using it day to day
Midjourney runs on the web at midjourney.com and in Discord on every plan. You sign in with a Discord or Google account; there is no Midjourney-only username and password. We found no integrations with storage or productivity apps beyond Discord and Google sign-in and the Discord bot.
Every plan is measured in GPU time. An image prompt uses about 1 minute, an upscale about 2 minutes and a batch of 4 SD videos about 8 minutes. Basic allows 3 image prompts at once in Fast Mode, Standard 3 in Fast or Relax, and Pro and Mega 12 in Fast or 3 in Relax. The Subtle and Creative upscalers double an SD image (for V8.2, 1024 x 1024 to 2048 x 2048); HD images generate at 2048 x 2048 and cannot be upscaled further. Text appears in images when you put the words in double quotation marks, on V6 and later; Midjourney says this works with the Latin alphabet and short words or phrases. Background removal is a manual mask: Smart Select's "Erase Background" button erases everything outside your mask, and you can download a transparent PNG. Only image uploads are documented, not PDF, Word or slide files.
Privacy, data and ads
On Basic and Standard, what you make is public on midjourney.com by default. Pro and Mega add Stealth Mode, which aims to keep creations off the website, without a guarantee in the Terms; images made in shared Discord channels stay visible. Midjourney's training-content summary says user prompts and inputs were used to train the model, and we found no training opt-out. The Terms also give Midjourney a broad license to your inputs and outputs. You can request a data export from Account Settings. Whether Midjourney shows ads is not verified; its Privacy Policy says non-essential advertising cookies are used only with your explicit consent.

Test results
We have not tested Midjourney yet, so this page makes no claim about answer quality, and we show no example outputs. Run the same kit in it and in the alternatives, in your own account:
- Summarize a report with traceable facts
- Analyze a spreadsheet and get the numbers right
- Edit an email without losing a detail
- Diagnose and repair a small program
- Research a question with sources that support the answer
- Make sense of documents that disagree
- Research a current question within a date window
- Edit an article without changing its facts
- Turn project notes into a report that agrees with itself
- Implement a small specification
- Refactor code without changing what it does
- Make a picture that follows a detailed brief
- Put exact text into a graphic
- Change one thing in a picture and nothing else
- Make a short clip that follows a brief
- Make a song that sings your lyrics exactly
- Read a script with names, numbers and abbreviations
- Design a logo with an exact name
Getting started
- Decide whether you need privacy. If your images must not be public, start on Pro or Mega, which include Stealth Mode.
- If you work for a company with more than $1,000,000 a year in revenue, choose Pro or Mega, because the Terms require it for you to own your assets.
- For lighter use, Basic at $10 a month gives 200 minutes of Fast time, about 200 image prompts by our calculation. Choose Standard if you want unlimited Relax Mode images.
- Sign in with Discord or Google and try a few prompts, putting any words you want in the image in double quotation marks.
- Compare Midjourney with other image tools on our tools page, and read how we check vendor claims.

Questions
Does Midjourney have a free plan?
No. Midjourney has no free plan and no trial on the website or in Discord. The only trial is a limited one in the separate niji · journey mobile app.
Can I use Midjourney images commercially?
Midjourney's Terms say you own the images and videos you make, and ownership survives cancellation. The exception: a company, or an employee of a company, with more than $1,000,000 USD a year in revenue must be on Pro or Mega to own its assets. Upscales of other users' images stay theirs.
Are my Midjourney images private?
Not on Basic or Standard: creations are public on midjourney.com by default. Pro and Mega include Stealth Mode, which aims to hide creations from the website, though the Terms do not guarantee it; images in shared Discord channels stay visible.
Can Midjourney make video from text?
Not directly. Midjourney video starts from an image, either one it made or one you upload, and turns it into a 5-second clip; the text prompt is optional. Basic makes SD (480p) video; Standard and above add HD (720p).
How much does Midjourney cost?
Basic is $10 a month, Standard $30, Pro $60 and Mega $120, before tax. Yearly billing is paid up front: $96, $288, $576 and $1,152. Extra Fast time costs $4 an hour.
Does Midjourney train on my prompts?
Midjourney's training-content summary says user prompts and inputs were used to train the model. We found no official page describing an opt-out, and Stealth Mode is not documented as one.
