Quick verdict

Canva is a template-based design tool with AI built in. Canva Free costs nothing and includes 5GB of storage, 1.6+ million templates, a logo maker and an allowance of up to 20 uses a month of Standard or Premium AI tools, such as image generation, the Image Upscaler and turning images into videos. It has no Ultra AI tools, so no AI video clips. Canva Pro is $18 a month, or $144 a year paid up front, before tax, for one person. It adds 100GB of storage, 3.6+ million templates, Standard AI tools that do not draw from the allowance (fair use limits apply), and up to 200 Premium or up to 20 Ultra AI uses a month. These counts are Canva's own "up to" figures, so the uses you actually get may differ. An AI Pass add-on, $100 a month for 40x more AI allowance, can be added only to a web-managed Pro subscription and cannot be bought alone.

Canva's AI Product Terms say you own your Output, except Output that modifies or incorporates Canva's licensed content, and that you "may use your Output for any lawful purpose". Library items such as stock photos follow Canva's Content License: Pro items are included on Pro and paid per design on Free. Neither plan includes Canva Shield, Canva's indemnity for AI output.

Pro also adds the Background Remover, SVG downloads and Canva Code, which builds interactive designs such as landing pages and dashboards from a prompt and publishes them as websites. Canva may use your activity and content to train its AI, and you can manage that in your privacy settings. This verdict rests on what Canva documents, not on our tests, which we have not run yet.

Strengths and limits

Strengths

  • Templates and a logo maker on FreeFree includes 1.6+ million templates, a logo maker with logo templates and an AI Logo Generator that draws on the AI allowance. Pro raises the template count to 3.6+ million.
  • Standard AI tools outside the allowance on ProOn Pro, Standard AI tools such as image generation and the Image Upscaler do not use the monthly allowance, subject to fair use limits. The Background Remover also does not use it, and can process up to 50 uploaded images in a folder at once.
  • Interactive sites from a prompt on ProCanva Code builds landing pages, dashboards, portfolios, quizzes and calculators from a prompt, and publishes them as live websites with a custom site address and password protection. Paid plans can connect up to five of your own domains.
  • You own your AI outputCanva's AI Product Terms say you own your Output, except where it modifies or incorporates Canva's licensed content, and may use it for any lawful purpose.
  • Training controls and many appsYou can manage whether Canva uses your data for AI training in the privacy controls page of your privacy settings. Canva runs on the web, on Mac and Windows, and on iOS, Android and Chromebook.

Limits

  • Free AI is limited to 20 usesPlan limit. Free has one allowance of up to 20 uses a month across Standard and Premium AI tools, reset on the 1st of each month (UTC), with short pauses after the limit. Free has no Ultra AI tools, so no AI video clips and no conversational design.
  • Key image tools are Pro onlyPlan limit. On Free, the Background Remover is documented as not offered, and SVG and transparent PNG downloads are listed only for Pro, Teams, Education and Nonprofits accounts. Magic Edit, Magic Eraser and Magic Expand are labeled Pro.
  • No indemnity for AI outputPlan limit. Neither Free nor Pro includes Canva Shield, Canva's indemnity for AI output. Output that modifies or incorporates Canva's licensed content is not yours to own.
  • Short AI video clipsWorkflow limit. On Pro, Canva AI makes 8-second clips with audio or 6-second clips without, from English prompts only, and each counts against the 20 Ultra uses a month. Canva does not name the video model.
  • Text in images and Canva Code limitsNot verified. No Canva page we read says its image generator renders legible text you specify; "Add Text to Photo" places editable text over an image instead. Canva Code output can be copied but not exported as a file, and a built-in database or user sign-in is not verified.

What it documents for each use

  • Images & Design Create images from a description · Make graphics for posts and slides · Edit my own photos · Remove a background · Design a logo
  • Coding & Development Build an app without writing code · Put an app or site online
  • Video & Animation Make short videos from a description · Turn a photo into a video
  • Business & Productivity Connect AI to the apps I already use

A use is listed when at least one plan documents every feature a task needs. Answer quality is a separate question: see below.

Using it day to day

Canva runs on the web at canva.com, in Mac and Windows desktop apps, and on iOS, Android and Chromebook. A Canva account also works with the Affinity desktop software, whose Premium AI tools (Generative Fill, Expand and Edit) come with Pro. The Apps Marketplace adds apps such as Google Drive, Bynder and Issuu, and you can import from Google Drive, Dropbox and OneDrive. AI connectors in external agents are included on Free and Pro; connectors inside Canva AI, such as Zoom, are Pro only.

Canva AI accepts PDF, DOC, DOCX, XLS, XLSX, CSV, TXT and MD files up to 10 MB each, three at a time, though Canva does not state Free access separately. The editor imports PDFs, PowerPoint and Google Slides decks, and Illustrator and Photoshop files. Free exports PDF, JPG, PNG and PPTX; Pro adds SVG, transparent PNG, CMYK and print-ready export. Free users can publish up to five Canva Sites on a free my.canva.site address, and paid plans can publish unlimited sites. Pro offers a free trial, but during the trial the AI allowance is the same as Free. On Pro the allowance resets on your billing date.

Privacy, data and ads

Canva's privacy policy says it may use your activity and content to train its AI, and that you can manage the use of your data for AI training in the privacy controls page under your privacy settings. You can download your designs at any time in the formats your plan allows. Whether the Canva app shows ads on Free or Pro is not verified; the privacy policy covers ad tracking for Canva's own marketing, not ads inside the app.

Test results

We have not tested Canva yet, so this page makes no claim about answer quality, and we show no example outputs. Run the same kit in it and in the alternatives, in your own account:

Getting started

  1. Start on Canva Free and open the privacy controls page in your privacy settings to decide whether Canva may use your data for AI training.
  2. Try the logo maker, a few templates and some AI images, keeping in mind that Free allows up to 20 AI uses a month.
  3. If you need background removal, SVG downloads, AI video clips or Canva Code, choose Pro at $18 a month, or $144 a year paid up front, before tax.
  4. If you try Pro on a free trial, expect the Free AI allowance until the trial ends.
  5. Compare Canva with other design tools on our tools page, and read how we check vendor claims.

Alternatives

  • Adobe Firefly Adobe says it does not train generative AI models on your content, and every paid Firefly plan includes unlimited Generative Fill, Remove Background and Upscale; Pro at $19.99 a month also includes Adobe Express Premium and Photoshop on web and mobile. About Adobe Firefly
  • Ideogram Ideogram documents a workflow for putting the exact words you quote into a generated image, which no Canva page we read claims, and its Terms allow commercial use on every plan. About Ideogram
  • Lovable For apps rather than designs, Lovable documents a built-in database with user sign-in and two-way Git sync with GitHub, GitLab or Bitbucket on every plan, including Free. About Lovable
