HeyGen: plans, prices, strengths and limits

HeyGen is an avatar video platform: you type a script and a stock or custom avatar presents it, and it can translate a video with lip sync. Commercial use starts with the first paid plan.

Quick verdict

HeyGen is built around presenter videos. Free has no credits: it gives 3 videos a month according to the pricing page (the help center says 1 to 3, depending on region), each up to 1 minute, at 720p and with a HeyGen watermark. Creator is $29 a month, or $24 a month billed yearly, $288 a year paid up front, with 600 credits a month, videos up to 30 minutes, 1080p export and no watermark. Pro starts at $49 a month for 1,000 credits, or $41 a month billed yearly, $488 a year paid up front, and adds 4K export, translation proofreading and the Seedance 2.0 engine; its tiers go up to 100,000 credits at $4,300 a month. HeyGen's pricing page does not say whether prices include tax.

Commercial use depends on the plan. HeyGen's Terms license Free output to you only "solely for personal, non-commercial, and internal evaluation purposes", so it may not be sold, monetized or used for ads or client work. On Creator and Pro, the Terms say you own all rights in your input and output and HeyGen "does not restrict your ability to use User Output for your own purposes (including for commercial purposes)". On every plan, HeyGen keeps a broad license to your content, including to train its models; you opt out by email, not with a setting.

Credits pay for most paid features, for example 31 credits a minute for an Avatar IV video look and 4 for Avatar III, but HeyGen's help articles give different rates and HeyGen says the cost shown in the product is the one that counts. This verdict rests on what HeyGen documents, not on our tests, which we have not run yet.

Strengths and limits

Strengths

  • Avatars from a photo or a recordingFree lists 500+ stock avatars, 1 custom video avatar and up to 3 photo avatars. Creator and Pro list 700+ stock avatars and unlimited photo avatars; custom video avatar slots are 1+ on the pricing table and 1 to 5 in the help center, with extra slots at $29 a month or $300 a year.
  • Video translation with lip syncOn Creator and Pro, Video Translation re-voices a video in the original speaker's voice in 175 languages and dialects, up to 30 minutes per video and 10 target languages per job. Lip sync costs 6 credits a minute (Speed) or 10 (Precision). Free gets 30+ languages and 1 minute per video as a limited trial.
  • Written commercial rights on paid plansHeyGen's Terms for Creator and Pro say you own all rights in your input and output, may use the output for commercial purposes, and that HeyGen assigns to you any rights it acquires in the output. Watermark removal is a toggle in the Submit Video menu on all paid plans.
  • Long videos into clips on every planAI Clipping, on Free and paid plans, turns an upload of up to 10GB or a YouTube link, from 1 minute to 10 hours long, into highlight clips with captions, plus a timestamped transcript you can download as SRT. Instant Highlights cost 1 credit per 5 minutes on paid plans.
  • A whole video from a promptVideo Agent turns a prompt into a full video: 3 a month on Free according to the help center, and on paid plans 80 credits a minute in standard mode or 240 in Seedance mode, according to HeyGen's credits article. Unused credits roll over one cycle on monthly billing, or until renewal on yearly billing.

Limits

  • Free voice cloning: HeyGen's pages disagreeConflict. HeyGen's pricing comparison table and help center give Free 1 voice clone, while the Creator card on the same pricing page lists Voice Cloning under "Everything in Free, plus", which implies Free does not have it. Paid plans list up to 40 voice clones on Creator and 70 on Pro.
  • Free is personal use only, watermarked and shortPlan limit. Free videos are up to 1 minute at 720p and always carry the HeyGen watermark, with no option to remove it. Output is for personal, non-commercial use only. Whether Free users can download MP4 files is not verified: HeyGen describes a 720p video sharing link.
  • Credit rates differ between help articlesConflict. HeyGen's web credits article lists Avatar III at 4 credits a minute, translation without lip sync at 4 and Video Agent at 80 or 240; its mobile article lists 3, 2 and 60 or 180. HeyGen says the in-product cost is authoritative and that rates vary by account.
  • Not a footage editorWorkflow limit. AI Studio is a scene-based editor, not a traditional timeline, and not a text-based editor for footage you upload. Stylized captions are synced to each word, but closed captions are not currently available for avatar videos, only for translation projects.
  • Training opt-out by email onlyPrivacy limit. The Terms license your content to HeyGen, including to train its models, on every plan. The Privacy Policy says you may ask to opt out by contacting HeyGen by email; there is no setting for it.

What it documents for each use

  • Images & Design Create images from a description · Make graphics for posts and slides
  • Video & Animation Make short videos from a description · Edit my own video footage · Turn a photo into a video · Make a video with a presenter · Add captions to a video · Turn a long video into short clips
  • Business & Productivity Connect AI to the apps I already use
  • Audio & Voice Turn a script into a voiceover · Use a copy of my own voice · Dub a video into another language · Transcribe recordings and files

A use is listed when at least one plan documents every feature a task needs. Answer quality is a separate question: see below.

Using it day to day

HeyGen runs on the web and in iOS and Android apps; the mobile app lacks some desktop features, such as advanced AI Studio edits and LiveAvatar. There is also a HeyGen API with its own pricing and API credits, and a HeyGen plugin for ChatGPT. Canva and Adobe Express integrations are listed without stated plan limits, while Zapier, Make, n8n, HubSpot and Clay need an API key and API credits bought separately.

AI Studio accepts JPG and PNG images and MP4 and MOV video up to 200MB, MP3 and WAV audio up to 100MB, and PowerPoint and PDF imports on every plan. Video translation takes MP4, MOV or WEBM uploads up to 5GB, or a YouTube or Google Drive link. Every plan lists 1,000+ stock voices. On paid plans you download an MP4, the audio only or a captions SRT file, at 720p or 1080p on Creator and up to 4K on Pro. Image generation costs 2 credits per image on paid plans; whether Free can generate images is not verified. Credits roll over as described above, and one-time credit packs are not sold on the web.

Privacy, data and ads

HeyGen's Terms give HeyGen a broad license to your content on every plan, including to train its models. The Privacy Policy says you may request to opt out of this training by contacting HeyGen by email; it is not a setting in the app. The Privacy Policy also lists a right to receive a copy of your personal information. Whether HeyGen shows ads is not verified. On Free, the license HeyGen grants you to your output is limited and revocable, so treat Free videos as test material.

Read the vendor's own page: HeyGen privacy and data controls. We make no legal or compliance claim.

Test results

We have not tested HeyGen yet, so this page makes no claim about answer quality, and we show no example outputs. Run the same kit in it and in the alternatives, in your own account:

Getting started

  1. Start on Free to try an avatar: videos up to 1 minute at 720p, with a watermark, for personal, non-commercial use only.
  2. Before you upload your face or voice, email HeyGen to opt out of model training, as its Privacy Policy describes.
  3. If you will publish commercially or need no watermark, choose Creator. Choose Pro for 4K export, translation proofreading or more credits.
  4. Check the credit cost shown in the product before each generation, because HeyGen's help articles list different rates.
  5. Compare HeyGen with Synthesia and other tools on our tools page, and read how we check vendor claims.

Your fit

Tell Find my AI what you do and what matters; it checks every plan of HeyGen against your priorities, next to the alternatives.

Alternatives

  • Synthesia Synthesia states that it does not use your inputs or outputs to pre-train its AI, and Starter, at $29 a month before tax, includes 3 personal avatars, 1080p downloads and no watermark. About Synthesia
  • Descript If you mostly edit your own recordings, Descript edits video by editing its transcript, and Hobbyist at $24 a month exports 1080p without a watermark. About Descript
  • Runway For generated scenes rather than presenters, Runway's Terms do not restrict commercial use of outputs, with no plan restriction stated, and Standard at $15 a month includes 625 credits and no watermark. About Runway

Questions

Can I use HeyGen videos commercially?

Not on Free: HeyGen's Terms license Free output only for personal, non-commercial and internal evaluation use, so no selling, ads or client work. On Creator and Pro, the Terms say you own your output and HeyGen does not restrict using it for your own purposes, including commercial ones.

Does HeyGen Free include voice cloning?

HeyGen's pages disagree. The pricing comparison table and help center give Free 1 voice clone, but the pricing page's Creator card lists Voice Cloning as something Creator adds to Free. Treat it as not verified until you see it in your account.

How much does HeyGen cost?

Creator is $29 a month, or $24 a month billed yearly, $288 a year paid up front. Pro starts at $49 a month for 1,000 credits, or $41 a month billed yearly, $488 a year paid up front, with larger tiers up to $4,300 a month. HeyGen's pricing page does not say whether tax is included.

Do HeyGen videos have a watermark?

Free videos always carry the HeyGen watermark, with no option to remove it. On all paid plans you can turn the watermark off in the Submit Video menu.

What resolution can I export from HeyGen?

Free is documented at 720p, through a video sharing link. Creator exports up to 1080p and Pro up to 4K.

Does HeyGen train on my videos?

HeyGen's Terms license your content to HeyGen, including to train its models, on every plan. Its Privacy Policy says you can request an opt-out by email.
