Perplexity Pro. It documents citations in every answer and a Research mode. ChatGPT searches the web too, so run our source kit in both and see whose citations hold up.
AI Compare
Prices for United States, before sales tax Data release 2026.10.16-3, Oct 16, 2026 Rules 2.1.0
Comparing ChatGPT Plus and Perplexity Pro: individual plans, prices for United States. Change the plans below to compare any other two.
ChatGPT and Perplexity both answer questions with help from the web, which is why people compare them. They are built differently. ChatGPT Plus is OpenAI's general assistant, with tools for files, data, images, coding and agents. Perplexity Pro is a search and research product: every answer comes with citations, and you can choose among AI models from several companies. This page is for people deciding which one to pay for, or whether they need both. We also cover the free tiers and the higher plans, ChatGPT Pro and Perplexity Max.
Everything here is what OpenAI and Perplexity document on their own pricing and help pages for individual plans in the United States, checked on October 12, 2026. Each row in the comparison below links to its source and shows when it was verified. Where a company does not say something, we say it is not documented. That is not the same as saying the feature is missing.

Perplexity says you can 'generate and edit images', but the documented edits are Regenerate or a follow-up prompt on a generated image; uploads are described for analysis only. Editing a photo you upload is not documented.
ChatGPT Images can follow an instruction to make an image's background transparent, and you can upload an existing image to edit. No separate background remover tool.
No Perplexity page documents background removal.
OpenAI says ChatGPT Images can follow instructions to add text; its poster template tip says to describe any text you want included.
No Perplexity page documents rendering specified text inside generated images. Image models offered include GPT Image 1, Nano Banana and Seedream 4.5.

ChatGPT makes no video on this plan (no video row on the pricing page, Sora closed), so a video watermark does not apply.
No Perplexity page says whether its Veo 3.1 videos carry a visible or invisible watermark.
ChatGPT Sites (public beta): describe a website, app or game in Work (web) or Work or Codex (desktop app) and ChatGPT builds it, with a private preview. Building or editing counts toward Codex usage.
Create files and apps builds web apps and dashboards from a prompt, and Computer builds websites and web apps. Pro: 'Limited amount Create files and apps queries every 30 days'; Computer has no monthly credits on consumer Pro (one-time 4,000 bonus, buy more).
Sites publishes to a ChatGPT-hosted URL; you choose selected people, workspace or public. No fixed limit on the number of Sites on Plus or Pro, but usage and storage limits apply; hosting usage is separate from Codex usage.
Computer-built websites publish to a Perplexity-hosted pplx.app URL (private, specific people or public; consumer sites are public by default), on web. 'Publish with Vercel' deploys to your Vercel account.
Sites lets you rename the ChatGPT-hosted URL or connect an apex domain or subdomain you own via DNS records (Site settings > Add domain). Sites does not register domains. Help says 'Where custom domains are available'.
Through 'Publish with Vercel' (Vercel connector, your own Vercel account) you can serve a Computer-built site on your own domain; pplx.app addresses are customizable but stay on pplx.app.
Sites offers D1 relational database (10 GB per site) and R2 object storage for files, plus 'Sign in with ChatGPT' so visitors can save their work.
No Perplexity page documents a database or user sign-in for websites and apps Computer builds.
Sites can publish a compatible local project from the ChatGPT desktop app or Codex; for a local source project each saved version is tied to its Git commit. No download of a web-built Site's code is documented.

No ChatGPT add-on that works inside Gmail is documented; Gmail data reaches ChatGPT only through its own connectors and plugins.
No official page describes a Perplexity add-on or side panel inside Gmail. Perplexity offers a Gmail and Google Calendar connector (read from Perplexity's own app), Computer in Email (you email computer@perplexity.com) and the Comet browser assistant; none runs inside Gmail itself.
No ChatGPT add-on that works inside Google Docs is documented; OpenAI lists add-ins for Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Google Sheets only.
No official page describes a Perplexity add-on inside Google Docs. Perplexity only offers a Google Drive connector (search Drive files from Perplexity's own app) and export to Google Drive; that is a connector, not working inside Docs.
ChatGPT for Google Sheets add-on: build, analyze and update sheets inside Sheets. Pricing table: Yes for Plus.
No official page describes a Perplexity add-on inside Google Sheets. Perplexity only offers a Google Drive connector (search Drive files from Perplexity's own app) and export to Google Drive; that is a connector, not working inside Sheets.

Consumer Terms of Service (Free, Pro and Max) allow personal, non-commercial use only and bar exploiting the Services for any commercial purpose without written permission; the terms do not say who owns Output.
No cloud-storage bundle.
No cloud-storage bundle.
Web, iOS, Android; desktop app on macOS and Windows.
Web; desktop app for Windows 10 (1809+) and macOS 15+; mobile app subscriptions referenced.
Both plans are $20 a month. OpenAI says it does not support yearly billing for Go, Plus or Pro, so ChatGPT Plus is monthly only. Perplexity Pro's $20 monthly price comes from Perplexity's own announcement, and its pricing page shows $17 a month when billed yearly, about $204 a year; Perplexity does not print the yearly total, so we derived it. Perplexity also runs limited-time credit offers, which we list but never count as part of the price.
For heavy use, ChatGPT Pro is $100, $200 or $500 a month, billed monthly. Perplexity Max shows $167 a month when billed yearly, on the web only; we could not confirm a monthly price for it on an official page. Neither company says whether US sales tax is included, so every total on this site is before tax.
Perplexity is built around search: its plan pages say every answer includes citations, and its help centre lists models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and others that Pro users can choose from. ChatGPT is one company's assistant with web search on every plan, plus tools for files, data, images, coding and agents. A model picked inside Perplexity answers with Perplexity's tools and limits, not with ChatGPT's.
Both document web search. Perplexity documents citations in every answer and a Research mode with monthly limits. OpenAI documents search on every ChatGPT plan and expanded deep research on Plus. Whether each citation actually supports its claim is what our source kit checks; run it in both if research is your main job.
OpenAI lists data analysis on Plus, with interactive tables and charts. Perplexity Pro accepts PDFs, CSVs, audio, video and images, up to 50 files per project, and lists creating files and apps such as spreadsheets and dashboards, but its pages do not say that it computes over your data. We mark data analysis as not verified for Perplexity, not as missing. Our spreadsheet kit shows whether the numbers come out right.
Both generate images. Perplexity Pro also offers limited video generation. ChatGPT lists no video generation since OpenAI discontinued the Sora web and app experiences on April 26, 2026.
ChatGPT Plus includes Codex, OpenAI's coding agent, with limited use of its top model and optional credits. Perplexity lists no dedicated coding agent. For agents, OpenAI documents the ChatGPT Work agent on desktop, web and mobile; Perplexity documents Comet Assistant with monthly limits and expanded access to Perplexity Computer.
ChatGPT works inside Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Google Sheets through extensions, and Plus adds apps that connect to internal tools. Perplexity Pro lists more than 400 app connectors without naming them on the pricing page. ChatGPT also lets you use custom GPTs; Perplexity's custom Spaces are not confirmed for consumer plans on the pages we checked.
OpenAI documents 256K tokens for ChatGPT's reasoning models on Plus and voice conversations with video. Perplexity does not state a context window or voice mode details by plan on the pages we checked.
Both use your data to improve their AI by default. In ChatGPT, switch off "Improve the model for everyone" under Settings, Data controls. In Perplexity, turn off "AI data retention" in Preferences. Turning training off says nothing about other storage, so read each privacy page if your work is confidential.
OpenAI says ads may appear on ChatGPT Free and Go in the United States; Plus has no ads. Perplexity announced an ad experiment in 2024, and we found no current official statement about ads, so that row stays not verified.
Perplexity Free gives citations in every answer, three Pro searches a day and one Research query a month, with basic models. ChatGPT Free documents web search plus limited uploads, data analysis, deep research, image generation and voice, and may show ads. If you mostly look things up a few times a day, Perplexity Free may be enough; if you also work with files and data, try ChatGPT Free first.
You can export your ChatGPT data from its settings or OpenAI's privacy portal. Perplexity documents no self-service export on the pages we checked. Neither company documents importing the other's history, so moving means starting fresh.
This comparison was written by the What the tech desk with AI assistance, from the facts in our data release. We have not yet run our test kits on these two plans, so nothing here is a claim about quality. When we run them, the results will appear with their dates, and the change will show in the change log.
Perplexity Pro. It documents citations in every answer and a Research mode. ChatGPT searches the web too, so run our source kit in both and see whose citations hold up.
ChatGPT Plus is the documented fit: OpenAI lists data analysis with tables and charts. Perplexity's pages do not say it computes over your data. Run the spreadsheet kit in both before deciding.
ChatGPT Plus includes the Codex coding agent. Perplexity lists no dedicated coding agent. Try our code kit with ChatGPT, and compare ChatGPT Pro if you hit limits.
ChatGPT Plus works inside Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Google Sheets through extensions. Perplexity lists more than 400 connectors but no Office extensions on the pages we checked.
Both document one: the ChatGPT Work agent on desktop, web and mobile, and Perplexity's Comet Assistant and Perplexity Computer. Limits differ and change often, so try the same small task in each.
We have not run these tests for you unless a result above says so. Each kit gives you the same files, the same prompt and the same checks for both tools.
Perplexity's help centre lists models from several companies, including OpenAI, that Pro users can choose. That gives you the model inside Perplexity, not ChatGPT's own tools such as data analysis, custom GPTs or Codex.
Perplexity Pro, yes: its pricing page shows $17 a month billed yearly, about $204 a year by our calculation. ChatGPT Plus, no: OpenAI says it does not support yearly billing for Go, Plus or Pro.
OpenAI says ads may appear on ChatGPT Free and Go in the United States, and Plus has no ads. Perplexity announced an ad experiment in 2024, and we found no current official statement.
Both do by default. Turn off "Improve the model for everyone" in ChatGPT's data controls, or "AI data retention" in Perplexity's Preferences.
Neither company's documentation answers that, and we have not run our tests on these plans yet. Our source kit and spreadsheet kit give both the same material and the same checks.
Every fact links to its source and shows when it was verified. Read how AI Compare works and the change log.
