This page is for people choosing between the two $20 plans that most readers ask about: ChatGPT Plus from OpenAI and Google AI Pro, the plan that unlocks the paid version of Gemini. It also covers the free tiers and the two cheaper plans, ChatGPT Go and Google AI Plus, because many people do not need a $20 plan at all.
Everything here is what the two companies document on their own pricing and help pages for individual plans in the United States, checked on October 12, 2026. Each row in the comparison below links to its source and shows when it was verified. Where a company does not say something, we say it is not documented. That is not the same as saying the feature is missing.

ChatGPT Plus is $20 a month. OpenAI says it does not support yearly billing for Go, Plus or Pro, so there is no discount for committing. Google AI Pro is $19.99 a month, or $199.99 a year. The yearly price works out at about $16.67 a month, but you pay it all up front, and you cannot cancel part way through and get the rest back.
The Google plan is also a storage plan. AI Pro includes 5 TB of Google storage, and Google lists YouTube Premium Lite among the extras in the United States. If you already pay Google for storage, check whether AI Pro would replace that payment before you count it as an extra cost. We do not put a value on the extras, because they only matter if you would use them.
Neither company says on these pages whether US sales tax is included, so every total on this site is before tax.
Google documents a 1 million token context window for AI Pro and file uploads of up to 1,500 pages. OpenAI documents a 256K context for ChatGPT's reasoning models on Plus, and "expanded" uploads without a page figure. If you work with very long reports, Google's published limits are higher. How well either one uses a long document is a separate question that only testing answers.
OpenAI lists data analysis on Plus, with interactive tables and charts, and web search on every ChatGPT plan. On the Google plan pages we checked, neither spreadsheet computation nor search answers with source links is described for Gemini. We mark both as not verified for Gemini, not as missing. If either matters to you, run our spreadsheet and source kits in both apps before deciding.
AI Pro puts Gemini inside Gmail, Docs, Sheets and Vids, and adds Meet notes. ChatGPT works with Google Sheets, Excel, Word and PowerPoint through extensions, which are fully available on Plus. If you want help inside the Google apps you already use, Gemini is the documented choice.
Both plans generate images. For video, Google includes 1,000 Flow credits a month on AI Pro. OpenAI discontinued the Sora web and app experiences on April 26, 2026, and lists no video generation on ChatGPT plans.
Plus includes Codex, OpenAI's coding agent, with limited use of its top model and optional credits. AI Pro includes Jules with higher limits, plus Antigravity and AI Studio. For agents that use a browser, OpenAI documents the ChatGPT Work agent on desktop, web and mobile. Google documents Chrome auto browse in the US and India on AI Pro.
Both services use your chats to improve their models unless you turn it off. In ChatGPT, switch off "Improve the model for everyone" under Settings, Data controls. In Gemini, turn off Keep Activity. Google says chats are still kept for up to 72 hours. Turning training off says nothing about how long data is stored for other purposes, so read each privacy page if your work is confidential.
OpenAI says ads may appear on ChatGPT Free and Go, and Plus has no ads. We found no official statement about ads in the Gemini app, so that row stays not verified.
Both free tiers include image generation, voice conversation and a deep research mode, which Google says may be unavailable on its free tier when demand is high. ChatGPT Free documents limited data analysis and web search, and may show ads. Gemini's free tier comes with 15 GB of Google storage, and Google describes its limits as compute-based, refreshing every five hours up to a weekly cap. If you use an assistant a few times a week, try the free tier of each for your real tasks before you subscribe.
You can export your ChatGPT data from its settings, and your Gemini data through Google Takeout. An export is a copy of your history. Neither company documents importing the other's conversations, projects or memory, so moving means starting fresh. Plus is billed monthly, so you can stop at the end of any month. A yearly AI Pro plan saves money only if you keep it for the full year.
This comparison was written by the What the tech desk with AI assistance, from the facts in our data release. We have not yet run our test kits on these two plans, so nothing here is a claim about quality. When we run them, the results will appear with their dates, and the change will show in the change log.
Google AI Pro. It puts Gemini inside those apps and adds Meet notes. ChatGPT reaches Sheets and the Microsoft apps only through extensions. Check the Docs features on your own account, because Workspace features can differ by account type.
ChatGPT Plus is the documented fit: OpenAI lists data analysis and web search on the plan. For Gemini, both are not verified rather than missing. Run the spreadsheet kit and the source kit in both apps before you pay.
Gemini. Google AI Pro includes 1,000 Flow credits a month, and Google AI Plus includes 200. OpenAI lists no video generation on ChatGPT plans after it discontinued the Sora apps on April 26, 2026.
