What you actually pay
Both plans are $20 a month. OpenAI says it does not support yearly billing for Go, Plus or Pro, so you can stop ChatGPT Plus at the end of any month but there is no yearly discount. Claude Pro can be paid yearly on the web at $200, about $17 a month, up front. A yearly plan saves money only if you keep it for the full year.
Neither company says on these pages whether US sales tax is included, so every total on this site is before tax.
Limits
Anthropic says Claude Pro has a usage limit per session that resets every five hours, plus a weekly limit, and Claude Code shares them. OpenAI describes Plus as having expanded messages, uploads and deep research compared with Free, without published figures on the pages we checked. If you hit limits often, compare the higher tiers rather than paying for both: ChatGPT Pro at $100, $200 or $500 a month, and Claude Max at $100 or $200 a month. All of them are billed monthly.
Where the documented differences are
Long documents
Anthropic documents a context of up to 1 million tokens on all of its individual plans. OpenAI documents 256K for ChatGPT's reasoning models on Plus and 54K for its faster Instant model. If you work with long reports, contracts or codebases in one chat, Claude's published limit is higher. How well either uses a long document is a question only testing answers.
Files and data analysis
Both document file uploads and data analysis. OpenAI lists data analysis with interactive tables and charts on Plus. Anthropic documents code execution that lets Claude create and edit files, and accepts PDF, Word, CSV, text and Excel files of up to 500 MB each, up to 20 files in a chat. Our spreadsheet kit checks whether the numbers actually come out right.
Images and video
ChatGPT Plus generates images. Claude does not generate photos or illustrations on any individual plan; it can build diagrams, charts and other visuals from code, which Anthropic lists as a beta. Neither offers video generation: OpenAI discontinued the Sora web and app experiences on April 26, 2026.
Coding and agents
Plus includes Codex, OpenAI's coding agent, with limited use of its top model and optional credits. Pro includes Claude Code under the same five-hour and weekly limits as chat. For agents that use a browser, OpenAI documents the ChatGPT Work agent on desktop, web and mobile, and Anthropic documents Claude in Chrome on Pro.
Custom assistants and other tools
ChatGPT lets you use custom GPTs; Anthropic lists no equivalent and offers Projects instead. For other software, ChatGPT works inside Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Google Sheets through extensions. Claude connects to services such as Google Drive, Gmail, Google Calendar, GitHub, Slack and Microsoft 365, and Pro adds Claude for Microsoft 365.
Privacy and ads
ChatGPT uses your chats to improve OpenAI's models by default; switch off "Improve the model for everyone" under Settings, Data controls. Anthropic asks you to choose when you sign up and lets you change it any time in Privacy Settings, but does not state which option is selected by default, so check it. Turning training off says nothing about how long data is stored for other purposes, so read each privacy page if your work is confidential.
OpenAI says ads may appear on ChatGPT Free and Go in the United States; Plus has no ads. Anthropic says Claude is ad-free on every plan.
When the free tier is enough
ChatGPT Free documents limited uploads, data analysis, deep research, image generation and voice, plus web search, and may show ads. Claude Free includes Sonnet and Haiku, web search, file creation with code execution, voice mode, memory and up to five projects, without ads, but not Research or Claude Code. Try both on your real tasks before you subscribe.
Switching later
You can export your ChatGPT data from its settings or OpenAI's privacy portal, and your Claude data from the web or desktop app, though not from the phone apps. An export is a copy of your history. Neither company documents importing the other's conversations, projects or memory, so moving means starting fresh.
How this page was made
This comparison was written by the What the tech desk with AI assistance, from the facts in our data release. We have not yet run our test kits on these two plans, so nothing here is a claim about quality. When we run them, the results will appear with their dates, and the change will show in the change log.
