What you actually pay
The two plans cost almost the same. Claude Pro is $20 a month, or $200 a year, which Anthropic describes as $17 a month billed up front on the web. Google AI Pro is $19.99 a month, or $199.99 a year, about $16.67 a month, also paid up front. A yearly plan is not cancel-any-time: it saves money only if you keep it for the full year.
The difference is what comes with the price. Google AI Pro is also a Google storage plan with 5 TB, and Google lists YouTube Premium Lite among the US extras. Claude Pro has no storage bundle; the money goes into the assistant and Claude Code. Neither company says on these pages whether US sales tax is included, so every total on this site is before tax.
Limits
Anthropic says Claude Pro has a usage limit per session that resets every five hours, plus a weekly limit, and the same limits cover Claude Code. Google describes AI Pro's limits as expanded compared with the free tier, without a figure on the pages we checked. Both companies sell higher tiers for heavy use, so if you hit limits often, compare Claude Max with Google AI Ultra rather than paying for two $20 plans.
Where the documented differences are
Long documents and files
Both document a context of up to 1 million tokens: Anthropic for all of its individual plans, Google for AI Pro. Anthropic accepts PDF, Word, CSV, text and Excel files of up to 500 MB each, up to 20 files in a chat. Google documents uploads of up to 1,500 pages on AI Pro. How well either one uses a long document is a question only testing answers.
Data analysis and sources
Anthropic documents code execution, which lets Claude create and edit files and work through spreadsheets, and web search on every plan, including Free. On the Google plan pages we checked, neither spreadsheet computation nor search answers with source links is described for Gemini. We mark both as not verified for Gemini, not as missing. Our spreadsheet and source kits are the quickest way to see the difference for yourself.
Google apps and other tools
AI Pro puts Gemini inside Gmail, Docs, Sheets and Vids, and adds Meet notes. Anthropic lists no Google Workspace integration of that kind. Instead, Claude connects to other services through connectors, including Google Drive, Gmail, Google Calendar, GitHub, Slack and Microsoft 365, and Pro adds Claude for Microsoft 365. If you want help inside Google's own apps, Gemini is the documented choice. If your work spans several tools, Claude's connectors cover more of them.
Images and video
Google AI Pro generates images and includes 1,000 Flow credits a month for video. Claude does not generate photos, illustrations or video on any individual plan. It can build diagrams, charts and other visuals from code, which Anthropic lists as a beta on web and desktop.
Coding and agents
Claude Pro includes Claude Code, Anthropic's coding agent, under the same five-hour and weekly limits. AI Pro includes Jules with higher limits, plus Antigravity, AI Studio and Android Studio. For an agent that uses your browser, Anthropic documents Claude in Chrome on Pro, and Google documents Chrome auto browse on AI Pro in the US and India.
Projects and custom assistants
Claude has Projects, which keep files and instructions together. Gemini has Gems, Google's custom assistants, and Gemini Notebook for research and writing. Anthropic does not list a feature like Gems, so that row is not verified for Claude.
Privacy and ads
Gemini uses your chats to improve Google's models unless you turn off Keep Activity, and Google says chats are still kept for up to 72 hours. Anthropic asks you to choose whether your chats help improve Claude when you sign up, and you can change it any time in Privacy Settings. Anthropic does not state which option is selected by default, so check it when you start. Turning training off says nothing about how long data is stored for other purposes, so read each privacy page if your work is confidential.
Anthropic says Claude is ad-free. We found no official statement about ads in the Gemini app, so that row stays not verified.
When the free tier is enough
Claude Free includes Sonnet and Haiku, web search, file creation with code execution, voice mode, memory and up to five projects. It does not include Research or Claude Code. Gemini's free tier includes Gemini Live for voice, image generation, a deep research mode that Google says may be unavailable when demand is high, and 15 GB of Google storage. If you use an assistant a few times a week, try both free tiers on your real tasks before you subscribe.
Switching later
You can export your Claude data from the web or desktop app, but not from the phone apps, and your Gemini data through Google Takeout. An export is a copy of your history. Neither company documents importing the other's conversations, projects or memory, so moving means starting fresh. If you pay yearly, switching saves money only from your next renewal.
How this page was made
This comparison was written by the What the tech desk with AI assistance, from the facts in our data release. We have not yet run our test kits on these two plans, so nothing here is a claim about quality. When we run them, the results will appear with their dates, and the change will show in the change log.
